The Empty Pot is a traditional tale from China about bravery and honesty. When the Emperor gives children flower seeds, Ping is the one child brave enough to present the Emperor with an empty pot after a year. As it turns out, all children were given cooked seeds, and Ping was the only child to tell the truth. The story is simple and impactful, very easy to understand: Embarrassment is unnecessary when truthful, because honesty is both courageous and triumphant. What stands out to me most about this text are the illustrations, inspired by traditional Chinese landscape and pot painting, featuring pastel colors, vibrant details, thin line art, and intentional framing to lead the eye to different focus points.

I love the message of this story! Honesty will get you everywhere in life, and this is a message that students need to learn as early as possible. The fact that this story is multicultural extends the depth of meaning for me, as it signifies that this is a moral that extends across all cultures.

Lovely book about the importance of honesty. For a special treat, check out this book being read by the Academy Award winning Rami Malek on Youtube.

The Empty Pot is a beautifully illustrated Chinese folktale that brings up moral themes of honesty, integrity, and trying your best. Ping is a young boy who loves flowers, and is offered the opportunity to become the successor to the Emperor along with the rest of the children in the country. The Emperor gives each child a seed to grow, but Ping finds himself unable to grow anything. Ping demonstrates perseverance as he spends the whole year trying to grow a flower from this seed, even though he begins to feel hopeless. Ping shows children that they should always try their best, even if they are afraid of failure. At the end, Ping is honest about his seed and is rewarded for his truthfulness.
A great read for all ages, The Empty Pot emphasizes the importance of integrity by using a young character that is relatable to young readers. Paired with illustrations that accurately depict the plot, Demi created beautiful visuals for readers to better understand the book while experiencing the Chinese culture.

This book has Jacob really thinking about the book's lesson. At first he didn't understand that the other kids lied. We've had great conversation s about losing after reading this book.
