Short but sweet.

The Ransom of Dond is the story of Darra - sentenced to die from birth. Tradition dictated that the thirteenth child born to a family must be sacrificed to Dond on their thirteenth birthday, so that the island may be prosperous for another thirteen years. Darra was born a twin, unexpected by her mother and shunned by the village. Now, on the dawn of her thirteenth birthday, she thinks over her life up until that point and the sacrifice she has to make.

This is Siobhan Dowd's last book. Beautifully illustrated and, as I already said, short but sweet. It's just very cute.
