VERY engaging. I was hooked in the first few pages, and when it ended I was hungry for more.

The writing is simplistic and I couldn't connect with the characters. I thought it might be an artistic choice for the first few chapters as the main character grew up but it didn't change. Gave up at about 20%. Maybe a good older tween book?

My heart ached for Jacob, from start to finish.

Boy meets girl, girl leaves town, boy is reunited with girl years later when he finds out magic is real and he end up at a family style magic school. The writing is easy to digest and while it’s nuts groundbreaking by any stretch of the imagination, it was enjoyable enough.

Having a hard time getting into it. Again, I think too YA to me, but for readers who love YA, I think this would be a great option.

I got this on a whim and was disappointed. It’s definitely written for a younger audience and although I thought the plot line would suit me, it was so boring.

This was a very interesting start to a new series. We get the start of a budding young love between Jacob and Emilia, starting when they are kids, but then Emilia suddenly has to move away, and Jacob is left alone and disconnected from those around him, having always been a bit of a loner outside of his friendship with Emilia. When Jacob’s father dies, the magic within him that he doesn’t even know was there is unleashed, and Emilia reappears to bring him with her to learn how to be the wizard that he is. While it seems like he accepts being a wizard a little too easily, it moves the story along as needed and we meet the family that Jacob will become a part of. The only one who doesn’t seem to welcome him is Dexter, Emilia’s boyfriend, who seems like a jerk, and is suspect from the start. This is a world where a war is brewing between the rebel wizards known as « Dragons » and the main body of wizards. There is a lot of discord as well within the wizard council as well, and Jacob is thrust unwittingly into the heart of it. While this felt very much like a world building book than anything else, it was a good establishment of the characters and the conflict, and the ending was just enough cliffhanger to be compelling without being frustrating.

I didn’t really get into this until 30% of the way through. It did feel rushed and the backstory wasn’t really explored. Jacob’s magical development also felt rushed as it didn’t come across as a gradual process; one day he could just do all these spells! I did enjoy The Tethering enough to finish it, but I won’t be reading the next instalment.
