I obtained a vintage copy of this book in primary school. I started reading it and then conceded ground, fatigued by its laborious plot. However, I returned to it five years later with more experience in life behind me and finished it.

Jane Eyre exhibits a disconcerting reality of the Victorian era from a feminine perspective. Hemmed in by society, orphaned and thrust to the ravages of fate but still retaining her Christian virtue and fighting for her beliefs Jane traverses a world opposed to everything she stands for.

But Jane is an epitome of religious virtue and refuses to despair ultimately traversing against all odds.

Overall, Bronte's narrative is labyrinthine. But it is also radical in how it conveys a sense of progression to the reader by the second half of the novel which reads like a Victorian thriller. With the hint of the supernatural to it, Jane Eyre is as tantalizing today as it was when it first fell upon Bronte's unsuspecting England.

it was okay i didn’t hate it. towards the end when the chapters had plot twists i liked it but then again eh. i felt like so much of it was predictable and it didn’t have to be that long. especially since the last chapter was like 5 pages. anyways a lot of words, long chapters, amazing audiobook

I studied this for Uni and it is brilliant, the plot is heavy but amazing to analyse. But Bertha, or Antoinette, is ignored. To take Spivak’s criticism this book is an allegory of colonisation and it is sad that her story is ignored and erased under Jane and Rochester’s love. While we need to understand the time the author wrote in, this criticism still remains when modern readers view this.

I went into Jane Eyre with surface level information about it and I was so confused about what was so appealing about Mr. Rochester.

SpoilerI think Jane is dumb for going back to him when he basically told her that he was going to ‘chain her up’ with jewellery. He is by far the most unlikable character I’ve ever come across in a book

Finished this book one minute ago. I read the last 100 pages in one sitting and it’s now 2am. I’m just stunned and so relieved by the ending. It’s been so long since a story had me so invested that I felt physical ache for the characters’ love and misfortunes. Jane is such an icon I love her strong sense of self. I love the motifs in the imagery like the moon and wind and woods and fire etc It’s exquisitely written. I underlined the shit out of this book to the point i think I’ll have to buy a new copy since I destroyed this one with love. Definitely one of my all time favourites now
