It's been a while that I've read a page-turner! Reading this definitely brought me back to my childhood. After so many years of enjoying the Peter Jackson movies, I felt that the least I could do was give the books a try. Having watched the film adaptations, I inevitably compared scenes from the films to passages in the book. In some sense I do wish I had read the books first. Reading with a comparative eye can be a worthwhile exercise, and I did enjoy the moments of recognition when coming across a familiar scene. But it did somewhat detract from the full immersion; not enough to drop a star, but enough to affect my reading experience. That being said, I am still glad that I've decided to cast open the tomes, if only to appreciate Tolkien's legendary achievement in its full form. What an appropriate way to cap my time in Oxford as well!

It becomes obvious with each part why Tolkien is renowned as the father of modern fantasy literature. If you can endure some slow paced parts and some very verbose descriptions of nature and weather, you would definitely find something enjoyable in this book.
Also the songs to story ratio is not as bad as it was in The Hobbit.
