The hype is not real. I feel like this is a Cruel Prince situation, where I can’t connect to the writing, world, or characters at all. The only good thing I can say is that I flew through this book — I read this in basically one sitting, with only a layover in between — but only because there was no character development, only “action,” with no backstory to any of the characters we met. In fact, Marisol might be the most developed character in the book, and she’s a villain. Maybe this is the kind of story I would’ve devoured in my Mortal Instruments era, but even then I think the characters are just so flat that I would’ve been completely uninterested — I guess we’ll never know. Anyway, the hype doesn’t make sense to me here, and I wish I would’ve listened to my gut and just stayed away from this author.

This was my very first Steohanie Garber and I think I love her!

The book had a beautiful, vivid and whimsical setting that came to life with her descriptions and the characters’ voices.

The main cast was both adorable, and felt really humane: like someone you could have met in real life, put into a world filled with magic.

I found Evangeline very realistic and easy to relate to: someone lovely and brave, who gets pushed ariund by her own feelings, but wants to always see the good in people even though it’s proving increasingly difficult as her circumstances change.

I knew Jacks was big on the bookish sphere and I do understand he has a certain magnetism and charm that jump out of the book to you, which makes it hard not to fall for him.

I felt like the plot was pretty well-crafted, and like it was an exciting and sweet start to a very promising trilogy.

Evangaline and Jacks present a promising start to a trilogy. With twists and turns in the most unexpected of places, this fairytale of fairytales presents the question of who to trust and when? The best part of the story so far seems to be that Evangeline is immune to Jacks charms literally and can hold her own in a sticky situation. The part that prevents this from being 5 stars however is the fact that shes so desperate to be loved that shes vulnerable to manipulation and is easily won over by pretty much any man who gives her affection. This was annoying in the beginning with Luc and continued throughout the remainder of the book. Hopefully she is less susceptible to this in the following two books.

The perfect flight companion :) it’s a quick read and I read it over a day with lots of downtime on a flight. Can’t wait for the next one!
