glad this was an audio book otherwise wouldn’t have bothered to finish. i mainly wanted to read it because of the tv series house of the dragons -  and have to say i’m glad the screenwriters did a great job at improving the story, namely they toned down the sexism, fatshaming, ableism and hints of racism of the book.

having focused on more diverse fantasy books in the past years i found myself really bored of the stereotypical tropes here.

the storytelling is tiresome, even though at times this pretense historiography adds some comic relief in the form of mushroom, the court fool, who wrote down parts of the history.

also, spoilers,
the slaughter of 4 dragons by a bunch of drunk shepherds makes absolutely no sense
- feels like a lazy plot to me.

As both a history buff and a fan of A Song of Ice and Fire fan, this book was everything I wanted it to be and more! I'm so sad it's done and there isn't more yet! (Said every ASoIaF fan ever.)

I actually listened to this book on audio while at work. I'm not usually an audiobook person, but with the "non-fiction" tilt this takes I actually got a lot out of hearing it narrated. It somehow made it sound like someone was telling me an epic historical tale, whereas plainly reading it may feel like more of a slog through a textbook. The narrator was perfectly suited for the job, too. I really recommend trying it that way if the size and content seems daunting. (Then look at the pictures later.)

too many names of too many stupid ass men causing too many goddamn problems. there is a reason that the women in this book are superior and it is simply because they aren't men. so fuck
viserys i, maegor i, criston cole, daemon targaryen, jaeherys i, aegon ii, aemond, unwin peake, rogar baratheon, otto hightower, androw farman, blood, cheese,
and more 🥰.
also srs time, the book is good, but it got docked .75 for being confusing bc of all of the names (and lack of a map) and the other 1.25 for the misogyny, racism, and pedophilia.

A long and overwhelming read! Such a vast novel with a long description of the history of the Targaryens and their rule. But I absolutely enjoy such novels and very much enjoyed learning more about the dragon family!
