Personally had a hard time concentrating on this story. Thought it was well narrated though.

I am continually grateful to Sandra Cisneros for putting so much of the lives of Chicago Mexicans in writing, something I was appreciative to see in high school and even more now as an adult. How meaningful that this novel, written in some part for Cisneros father, came into my life in this year.

This is an epic journey in the life of one girl, Lala, and her immigrant Mexican family. Through her eyes the layers of her family fall away, one by one, and we follow her from preschool to adulthood while we follow her family through several generations through their stories and their actions. Every family has secrets - from outsiders, from each other, from themselves, and yet all these secrets are eventually revealed except the biggest one and in the end only Lala and the reader really understand what that secret is.
What I loved about the story is how successful Cisneros is at teaching us what it means to be Mexican in America and what one group uses as excuses to separate themselves from other people. She teaches us the language, customs, colors, smells and tastes of this life that some of us only see in passing. She shows us a different way of thinking.
I'm glad I finally read one of her books. It won't be the last.

It had some beautiful writing but at times it was hard to follow (not super plot driven) and it was hard to care for all the many characters introduced.
