I just love Mary Russel and I love where she takes me. Sherlock isn't too shabby either...

3.75 stars. I loved the descriptions of the moor and want so much to visit! This was a little slower going for me than other Mary Russell books (maybe because I listened to it?) but I enjoyed it. The reader had a TERRIBLE American accent! It was kind of hilarious!

I think 3 stars may be generous for this one. More like a 2-2.5.
Honestly, I didn't like this book as much as the other Mary Russell series I've read. Half the book was about Mary and Holmes traipsing all over the moor with little to no action. If I hadn't been a fan of the other books in this series, I would probably stop reading. But, the other books have been so delightful and interesting, that I will probably read the next one.

I enjoy listening to these & this one at the moor was a pleasure. To have not only the hound of Baskerville make an appearance but another mysterious moor hound, only added to the suspense.

I went on a Mary Russell spree when I first started reading the series, but I lost a bit of interest after the couple got together (how cliche of me). I've been in a bit of a Holmes mood lately and picked up the series again to see if it agreed with me a little more.

I'm not a fan of the Baskerville novel that forms the backbone, but Russell is as ever intriguing and it was enough to get me back into the series.

I love the Mary Russell books. This one was terrible.

I waver between giving this two stars or three stars. This book was so slow moving and rather boring. It could have easily been summed up as a 10 page short story and would have been a significant Improvement. I listened to this as an audiobook. If I had been reading it, I don't think I would have finished it. It dragged forever and had a completely lackluster ending

Definitely didn't make me want to holiday on Dartmoor!
Interesting characters, more than a few nods to Sherlock stories of old, and a good story. A little slow to get going, though, but nowhere near as slow as the one set in Palestine.

This book was definitely a good pick up from the 3rd book in this series. I guess I have been sad watching Russell move from a young teenager to a married woman who isn't as interested in solving a mystery and she is reading and researching. Her maturity as she has aged has changed her character considerably. It's like she goes into everything she does simply to appease her husband, Holmes, or because she wants to get it overwith and get back to Oxford and her researching. I did enjoy that this book isn't as heavy in theology as book #3. It runs in the same lines as book #1 and 2 in the series with regards to that subject.

I couldn't give 5 stars to a mystery book that I had already picked out the character that was to be the evil character the first time they were introduced. However, how the author got to explaining that person's outcome was very interesting. This book is medium speed movement. We continue to learn about Russell's and Holmes past and it is worth a read if you have got to this point in the series.

Overall I have to say that this was not one of my favorites of Laurie King's series. I thought the basic story dragged a bit and that what was happening in the central mystery was revealed a bit late in the book. I will say that the character development was excellent. I enjoyed getting better acquainted with Russell and learning a clue about a younger Holmes. The end resolved itself quickly and was exciting but I did drag a bit through the middle part of the book. Overall a decent read but not on the same level with "The Bee Keeper's Apprentice" and "Oh Jerusalem" (which is still my favorite so far by leaps and bounds and may cloud by judgment a bit when compared to other books in the series).
