Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, written by Jacob Grimm and Wilhelm Grimm and illustrated by Nancy Ekholm Burkert, tells the classic story of Snow White. This book was published on November 1, 1987, and is intended for ages 5+. This story tells of a beautiful girl who is controlled by her evil stepmother. One day when the evil stepmother finds out that Snow White is the prettiest in the land, she sends one of her huntsmen out to kill her. However, he has a kind heart and tells her to run instead of killing her. She comes across this little cottage filled with seven dwarfs who allow her to stay with them. When the queen finds out that Snow White isn't dead, she goes out to the cottage and convinces Snow White to take a bite of the apple she poisoned. The only thing that can save Snow White is a true love's kiss. This book is a little darker, so I would modify it for my classroom. I would still teach the important lessons the book has in it, like not trusting strangers. This life lesson is good for anyone reading the book, especially kids. <traditional literature> <life lessons> <adventurous>

Beautiful illustrations for a classic translation. This definitely makes my list of favorite picture-book versions of fairy tales.

I guess everyone wants to put their spin on these old fairy tales, but it’s difficult to have a stronger voice than Disney did as a visual medium is so powerful. I don’t think I have heard this version before. At the end, the kingdom of Snow White’s prince puts a pair of sandals on the wicked queen with hot coals in them and she has to dance until she is dead. Wow. Also, Snow White wakes up when the apple is dislodged from her throat. The prince does not kiss her.

I have to say in this one, that Snow White falls for the same trick from the Evil Queen 3 times. She may be most fair, but she is not the smartest in the land.

This was a very long book, lots of words. They did a full page spread of a picture and then a full page spread of words. I don’t like that as well and it makes for too long a story. The kids don’t like it either.

The niece kept telling me that this is not how the story goes. She didn’t like that it was different than the story she knew. She gave this 2 stars saying this story was all wrong. The nephew didn’t care for the story in general. When Snow White was visited by the old Queen the 3rd time the nephew said, ‘how dumb do you have to be to take something 3 times.’ I guess I can see his point. He was not a fan of the story either. The end shocked both of them. He also gave this 2 stars.

Traditional retelling with Queen trying to kill her three times, and a format like the Three Little Bears asking who ate and slept from the Dwarf's. The soft delicate illustrations are stunning.

Unique retelling of Snow White, but might be dark for young children. Same fairy tell but true to the Grimm Brothers version, while children might be looking for the happy Disney telling. There are beautiful pictures, but the big blocks of text in between made my lose interest in the story and I think will lose the interest of small children as well.
