This book was a pleasant surprise. I judged it by the cover and expected a eye-roller. I did like the two main characters; they felt more human than other detectives in novels I have read. More vulnerable and able to work out their shit. There was a large cast, some better written than others. It can be confusing keeping track of everyone at first.

Generally, the heavy topics in the twists are taken with care. There's discussion instead of horrid things  being shock value. The book does drag out the ending to give you twist after twist.

It seems like this will be a series. I'm not completely opposed to reading the next book. It's a maybe for me.

i probably should have DNFed this one, but the storyline sounded so good and i was hoping it would get better as it went on. there were many things i disliked about this book and one thing i liked about it. what i liked about it was the multiple POVs; however, even that got confusing sometimes because of the amount of characters. now moving on to the dislikes. the amount of cheating mentioned in this book was absolutely ridiculous with almost every character having cheated on their partner. it was painful to keep reading about these characters cheating on their significant others. i also HATED how the actions of some people the characters were blamed on mental illness or having a hard time as if that’s an excuse for what they did. another thing i disliked was the random switches from present to past in the middle of chapters with no warning whatsoever. this one is marketed as a thriller, but is much more of a mystery at 400 (slow) pages. maybe others will like this one, but i did not.

I really enjoyed this mystery.  The characters were interesting and created so many suspects.  The setting of the border between Wales and England helped add to the conflict.  I'll be reading future DC Morgan books.
