I really enjoyed the first book in the duology (and re-read it prior to starting this one). I had a really hard time with about the first 100 pages (the first section of the book). I even put it down for a couple of weeks. Ironically, if I had just read one chapter more, I would have been hooked again. I am not quite sure why I struggled with the first section, but the last 300 pages were excellent!
The main premise of the book is fighting to get a new ruler, so there are some really dark scenes in this book as the ruler on the throne, Shayla, lacks any kind of moral or ethical compass. I don’t typically love war stories, but there were other plot lines other than just battles. For that reason, I think I preferred the first book Hunted by the Sky, but I still liked Rising Like a Storm.
Specifically, I liked how Cavas and Gul’s relationship strengthened and deepened and I appreciated that while the star warriors relied on Gul/Cavas, there were a lot of other players and the action didn’t solely rely on the two of them. There were other characters who made alliances, solved problems, and pushed back against Gul/Cavas when they had bad ideas. I continued to love the backdrop, magic system and world that the author created. Also, the cover is gorgeous.
Overall, while I didn’t love this book as much as the first one, I thought it provided a satisfying conclusion to the story.
Side note- I think a duology was the perfect length for the story and I wish more authors did duologies!

Rising Like a Storm manages to deliver a book that examines one's responsibility, rebellion, and leadership. What begins as Gul struggling to embrace her powers, ends with epic battle scenes and questions about how to fight for the future. The character, and plot, development throughout Rising Like a Storm is a journey. Gul has to figure out what embracing her power means not only for herself, but also her relationship with Cavas. All while the world, and larger plot, has to figure out how to fight for freedom. While Gul's journey took center stage for me, especially at the end, I loved how epic Rising Like a Storm got! If you were craving some battle scenes, Bhathena delivers action, loss, and sacrifice all in one. If you enjoyed the dynamic between Cavas and Gul in Hunted By the Sky, Rising Like a Storm deepens it further and I found myself becoming more invested as I read.
