An amazing story about one man's harrowing journey, drifting westwards from Mexico across the Pacific Ocean for over a year, and eventually washing up in the Marshall Islands.

Franklin's telling of Jose Salvador Alvarenga's is seamless. Although gleaned from interviews with Alvarenga, and peppered with facts from experts in ocean currents, marine biology, survival medicine and metereology, the whole thing hangs together in a very compelling and well-integrated narrative. The parts that really stuck with me described the various ways Alvarenga tried to cope with the mental strain. Survival in such extreme situations takes a certain mindset, one I'm not sure I have. I loved reading about Alvarenga's inventiveness, perseverance and grit.

But no less compelling is Franklin's description of the difficulties Avarenga has had integrating back into life back home. After honing his mind to deal with the loneliness and hardships of life adrift, it's not easy to come back.

A well-written story for anyone interested in shipwrecks and people overcoming great odds to survive.

Great read. There was some repetition on occasion and the author seemed to gloss over and explain away the main character’s faith in a clear overlay of the author’s belief system, otherwise fast-paced and well-written.
