The central story was a nice introduction to the setting of this series. I have yet to read something by Bill Willingham that I don't like. I was ready to give this graphic novel 3 stars but the apendix story Wolf in the fold by Bill Willingham made me up the rating to 4 stars.I loved the story and it was a great background story for one of the main characters.

One of the first takes on "What if fairy tales were real?" trope.
Exiled from their homeland, residents of folklore now reside in (2010s) New York.

Mayor Snow White's sister is murdered, and it is up to the Sheriff Bigby (The Big Bad Wolf) to solve the crime.

Please check this book out of the library and tell Mrs. Svenson you love it, so she will order the rest of the series.

I enjoyed the world that Willingham created in this book and how he interpreted the way that characters from fables would coexist within today's society. The central mystery is a bit slight and wraps up too neatly, but it was fun to follow the twists along the way. The main characters are strong and nicely rounded, and I liked how peripheral characters that may play a larger role later in the series were briefly introduced. The humor sprinkled throughout is clever; I laughed out loud at Pinocchio's plight as an eternal boy, and the pig's multiple appearances in the city served as amusement and a reminder of the darkness that exists in Bigby. This is a promising start to the series and I will definitely be reading more.

What if sandman was bad, what if once upon a time was boring.

I enjoyed this because I generally enjoy twisted/fractured fairytale retellings. The art style was cool as was the spin on familiar characters. The plot was interesting, if a little predictable, but I'll definitely continue with these when I'm wanting to read a quick retelling or graphic novel/comic!
