To describe this book in one word: Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

The language throughout is captivating and transports you into the world Astrid finds herself in. I have never rooted for a character more than I have the protagonist in this novel. You feel every moment as if you are experiencing it with her.

I was at constant odds with loving and hating Ingrid and always sympathizing with the situations Astrid delves into. I found myself heartbroken at so many points and yet wishing that the novel would never end.

It reads like poetry and is an absolute necessity for everyone's library. Hands down one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read.

This was a really well written book. Her writing is very vivid and Astrid's world is so interesting and ever-changing. You forget that it is one lifetime.

Just an ok read. I think it was the subject as much as anything that I wasn't excited about. But it dragged. I had to turn to the audiobook to complete it.

Few books have stuck with me as strongly as this one. I can totally understand how people can give up on this book because it is depressing. It is probably the definition of depressing. However, life is not all sunshine and rainbows. Kids with emotionally absent parents get thrown into foster care and horrible things can and do happen to them. The thing I took away from this book most, was hope. The protagonist's entire world repeatedly falls apart and still she forces herself to go through the motions. She copes, not well, but she copes. She makes shitty decisions and people take advantage of her age and inexperience - usually with major consequences. Her one haven is ripped from her just as she thinks things are getting better.

I related to this character more than any I've encountered before or since. I didn't get a one way ticket through a broken foster system, but I know what it's like to be thrown away. Janet Fitch wrote a book that has resonated with me for nearly a decade and that I still embrace. I have given out copies as presents and have several copies that I have felt I should "rescue" from clearance piles in used book stores. This book is worth the emotional ravaging.
