other people have said it better than me, but people need to leave Anne Frank tf alone. Roth is asking interesting questions that are ultimately undermined by using a young dead person to make his points. I'm aware that couched in Zuckerberg's narrative voice this exploitation might seem more removed, but I would disagree with that. Also his narrative voice was painful to read at times.

This is the Roth of [book: Goodbye, Columbus] more than [book: Portnoy's Complaint], which I personally have no problem with. Basically Nathan Zuckerman visits his idol, E.I. Lonoff, in Massachusetts and finds that the genius had a terrible marriage and, although it's never explicitly named (probably because it wasn't a diagnosis at time), some OCPD. There's a weird post-modernist bit in the middle about Lonoff's houseguest and possible mistress. Overall pretty good.

A rare thing: a novel about a novelist which is actually good.

I was just completely unengaged - maybe it's because I was listening on Audiobook - I'd potentially give this another go in physical format after reading other peoples reviews but I was just bored listening.
