The plot itself wasn't super interesting to me, but I loved the way it was written.

My dad was an avid recreational fisherman and so I was an avid recreational fisherboy. I loved boats and the smell of the ocean and thrill of seeing a flash of silver in the depths as a caught fish was first revealed. I came to this book one day when I was a boy, ten or twelve years old, and saw the old black and white movie on television, featuring a heartbreaking performance by an aged Spencer Tracy. I immediately grabbed the book off of dad's shelf and read it end to end. I've since read it many times. It is an unquestioned classic of American literature. And that edition now sits on my shelf, ready to be reread.
