I liked this book more than I anticipated when I initially started it. It was rather enjoyable, with some bits of humor thrown in. There was a lot of drama thrown in between the multitude of characters. I found the chapter structure and writing to be unique and fun.

A witty, feminist take on Sherlock Holmes for fans of Enola Holmes and Veronica Speedwell. Full of dry humor and sarcasm, and written in the style of Jane Austen, this whimsical closed-room murder will delight Anglophiles.

Beatrice has a secret unbecoming of a lady of gentle breeding: she is a true crime girlie. She loves helping her favorite detective solve crimes via correspondence, but never did she dream she’d have the opportunity to solve one herself.

But when a guest at the autumn ball suddenly falls over dead, and the killer must be another guest, Beatrice must use her secret skills to apprehend the murderer before they strike again.

Nobody is who they appear to be in this caper with an extra hefty dose of dry humor. Given the plethora of female Sherlock Holmes takes in recent years, I’m not sure this book contributes anything particularly new or different. But it’s a fun, quick read for fans of Jane Austen-style dad jokes.

Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the ARC!

(Book will appear as part of a YouTube video in mid May)

Not usually a fan of “Emily dickens” style books but this was a fun, quick murder mystery.
