This was an informative, thought provoking look at US history and the stories that are often not told. I took my time reading this to fully understand and take in the information. The book has a variety of writing styles that make it such a unique collection from straightforward informational essays to novel-like recreations to poetry!

Four Hundred Souls should be a book that everyone reads and refers back to in order to understand history, systemic racism, and the problems/politics still present today. I look forward to using this as a stepping point and researching many of the topics that I had never learned about in school, as well as reading more from the contributors!

Extremely informative, each of the writers chose a lesser-known topic to write about which was refreshing. Having 90+ writers made each chapter feel fresh, which really helped the pacing issues that history books seem to struggle with. Despite having so many writers and covering such a wide timeline, each chapter connected surprisingly well. Just in awe of the scope of this project and how well it came together.

This anthology gives me a lot of topics to further look up. Oppression is heartbreaking but I liked how this history took pains to show how things got layered upon layered some melting quicker than others because a lot of histiography tends to act like the time dimension doesn't exist and that things are eternal. Like yeah, we were always bad off but there's been many slow creeps towards fascism, like revolution & counterrevolution. I'm marginalized but I'm white, so I'm feeling awkward about using the pronoun we, but still.
