Not sure why Nabakov would have called this one of the greatest short stories of all time. Man and woman engage in adulterous affair. Melodrama. The end.

Chekhov wrote great, interesting, hateable characters. I loved the way he describes things through the eyes of the main character.

Liked the writing style and will probably read more by Anton Chekhov. But the story is about two unlikeble people both married that meets and starts an affair. Can't really enjoy a story like that but the writing did interest me in other works by him

Didn’t get much from this story. All of the takeaways or messages are quite obvious and now a tired trope e.g i feel like he fell in love with her because she was exciting and forbidden rather than anything to do with her personality. He goes from not valuing women, to finally respecting this one woman causing him to value emotional intimacy. Made me roll my eyes a bit. I feel like for the story would have been more hard hitting when published and adultery was illegal and the stakes were higher and I hadn’t seen this story play out a million times. However, it did have beautiful imagery.
