I love Michael Robotham, this book was good but not his best. I have to admit that I got a bit lost and confused. Overall a good, quick read.

very rarely do mystery/thrillers surprise me but this had me guessing the whole way. really complex characters which might not be realistic but truly never a dull moment. the final reveal? idk if i believe it but it adds spice!

Michael Robotham is an master of the quality thriller--I have NEVER been disappointed by one of his books. "When You are Mine" is stand-alone, with a new lead, policewoman Philomena McCarthy. She's wanted to be in the police ever since childhood, when she saw a policewoman act heroically during a bombing. It's a funny choice of career for someone from a crime family.

In this novel Phil will challenge the police Old Boys' Club, start a feud with a decorated officer who's also a batterer, and risk her beloved career. This may not be Robotham's very best book but it is still impossible to put down.

I do wish he'd come up with better titles. This one's would give you little idea of what a good read hides between the covers.

2.5 stars. I have many thoughts about this. The story and the mystery/suspense was enjoyable but I just don't think I liked how the main character was written. Things also seemed a bit rushed at times and I felt like my head was spinning. Overall I enjoyed the read and found myself wanting to know what happens next, but there was just something missing ifor me.

I can't help feeling this is a children's book masquerading as a crime fiction book. From the style of writing to the characters. The paint-by-numbers approach with the character's level-one thought processes leaves me feeling like a 5-year-old. The only thing in the book that gives any indication it's for an audience over 10 is the contents, and that's slack at best.

An archetypal example of male authors can't write female characters. Our main protagonist in this book is every cliche under the sun. She's small but mighty, she's undermined but intelligent, and if there's an opportunity to be the hero; even if it defies all logic and common sense she's there in a heartbeat.

The only thing this book did have me liking was its readability. Very simple the pages did fly by which was a blessing considering my feelings towards the story.

Touching on the story solely, it's a very straightforward crime fiction novel dumbed down by one hundred. No rewarding payoff for the reader, no clever twists or plot lines to immerse into.

Overall not a great read, the only thing keeping me onside was how easy it was to read. Seeing the author has shifted a few of his other books over to Tele, I think it's clear this book was written with a TV deal in mind.
