One of my bottom 3 JQ books. I loved Dunsford so much from Splendid and just can’t reconcile him and Henry. There was nothing I liked about her

"Sometimes, Hen" he said, not turning back around to face her, "I think I would give my life just for one of your smile's. "

I knew this one was going to be my favourite of the three when I realised the story followed Dunford's love story. His character was my favourite throughout the two other books. You know when I side character kind of steals the show. Yeah. That. So I'm glad I got to see a book dedicated to him.

The story follows Dunford, who inherits an estate in Cornwall from a long distant relative. When he visits, he is surprised to witness Henrietta Barret, Henry for short, running the place. Henry, not wanting to leave her most beloved home, devise's a plan to get rid of the prim London man while maintaining her position at the Park. It's the usual enemies to lovers trope that I will always adore.

I love the chemistry between the two characters. Their wit and banter had me laughing out loud and I adored their interactions with each other. What I love in Quinn's work is that both the characters usually have a flaw that they most overcome before the characters become one. In this case, it was Henrietta's insecurities of being a hoydenish farm girl while Dunford's is his fear of not being loved in equal measure by the woman who might adore her home more than him.

My only woe with this story came at the very end when they both had miscommunication to the point of it being infuriating. I was close to screaming at the book for them to just talk it out or just trying to skip until the end. But I did enjoy how Quinn broke her usual conventions. Dunford professed his love first, and they both waited for a proper wedding rather than obtaining a special lisence because they might already be...ahem...with child.

Overall, I enjoyed the reading this one. I definitely recommend it to any romance readers and Quinn fans.

His rape-y/possessive behaviour knocks the book down half a star

3 stars.

Audiobook on this one. I just was not sure about it. I wanted to like her dramatic tone, but I really didn't like how drawled out her male voices were. I feel like this made it harder for me to get into the story.

I thought it was cute, nothing special and nothing terrible. Worth a read, but maybe not a reread, unless I am really in the mood. It may have something to do with me reading the 3rd first. This was what was available through my library so I went for it. The play on the names was cute. I thought the drama could have been too easily ironed out in less time and angst. the steamy scenes were soso at best. I am curious about the stories of the other characters, but not jumping to read them next.

I did enjoy this one. Henry was very endearing, but I didn't like all the relationship dynamics and power differences.

The audio book was very well done. I like that the whole series had the same narrator who uses specific voices for each character consistently. It was fun to listen because it was so thoughtfully done.

I personally think the ending saved the book. I was having a hard time getting interested but the ending really brought out the emotion and had me hooked.

Overall I enjoyed this book, but I thought that the use of the old "he's being mean to you because he likes you" trope was really unnecessary and took up too much of the latter half of the novel.
