I never really got into it.
SpoilerI think the time travel plot was really inconsistent which kind of annoyed me.
It was enjoyable but just not great. A lot of the details seemed very contrived or pointlessly dramatic (
Spoilerlike why did Sorsha write "malice, injustice, cowardice, escape" all over the tower walls?
). It might be that I read half of it in a terrible state of mind and body.
Edit: I just realized there was a quiz at the back of the book and I took it and I am Charlie :-)

This is a fun magical novel about sisters, curses, and adventures. Betty Widdershins wants to get away from dreary Crowstone where she lives with her sisters and grandmother. Her grandmother forbids this, and reveals the secrets of a family curse and some magical items. Adventure none the less ensues and the girls come face to face with criminals, smugglers, and a sorceress from their past. A fast paced read with strong female characters and some fancy plot twists, it’s not completely infallible but middle grade readers will be swept along in the adventure regardless.

This book follows the story of three sisters who are cursed to live on an island for generations, never able to leave or break the curse. FAMILY DRAMA.

When their father dies, they discover that there may be a way to break the curse, and they embark on a dangerous journey to find the objects they need to do so. I enjoyed the captivating world full of magic, mystery, and danger.

The instant I started listening to this story I was reminded of how special and magical children’s literature is, how the imagination is let loose, rules are broken and adventure really begins. The three widdershin sisters live with their Grandmother at Poachers Pocket. Their mother has died and their father is in jail. One foggy night Betty’s search for adventure is thwarted by her Grandmother who reveals that the three sisters are cursed and can never leave. Each sister has inherited a magical object and using these objects they embark on an adventure to break the curse. Having a story read at night is a highlight for every child and this audiobook is the perfect bedtime story. Nicky Diss is an excellent narrator, clear and articulate, drawing out the magic, building up the tension and capturing the voices of the characters. The story is full of magical names for places, characters, plants and I loved hearing these spoken out loud. This book is wonderful, it is storytelling at its best, utterly original. It is for all the family to love and share sitting around the fire, curled up in bed. With thanks to Netgalley and Simon and Schuster Audio U.K. for a copy of this audiobook.
