This is the third book by McMahon I’ve read and so far she never disappoints. A fast paced thriller with multiple timelines and multiple strong female leads all trying to solve the same mystery. I love this author’s skill in weaving supernatural with thriller and it’s always hard to put her books down. If you’re looking for a spooky winter thriller with some mystery elements I’d recommend this one!

An engaging read, it moved a bit slowly and I ended up speed reading to get through the last 30%.

I thought the ending was good.
Essentially, sleepers are zombies and eat human flesh or blood. I wonder if Gertie could go to final rest, if she were kept from eating humans.

Katherine turned out to be hella annoying. At first she was ok, but then she turned a bit stupid for the sake of the plot.
I guess that is the aspect of the ending others disliked. To me, it is only minor plotting issue and the horror ending is still satisfying.

The aunt's fate bummed me out  I felt like there was a lot of build up about her powers and her connection with Sarah and the powers of Gertie, but it never went anywhere. I don't understand why the aunt was so malicious. Did she kill Jacob? What actually happened? She is just a control freak? Did Gertie walk between worlds? What did the aunt see in the future?

The book had many hints of shapeshifting without there actually being shape shifting. that was cool, and I wonder if that was intentional or just part of my reading.

Although I liked this book. The Drowning Kind was much better. The characters were more developed and integral to the plot. This story seemed to kind of meander with too many characters and too much serendipity and drop aspects of the set up and vibe
It sets up that Sara and Gertie have powers but that doesn't really happen. Candace comes in with a gun out of nowhere. Gary comes around the same time that Gertie gets hangry. Katherine seems to not really think at all about bringing back the dead and then goes full throttle. Foxes seem to take a symbolic role, and the relationships between animals and humans are often noted, but that is more ambiance than plot.

For me, this was just okay. I just couldn’t get into it; however, I listened to it in the summer and wasn’t really in the mindset for a spooky/ghost book when I read it so it was hard to get invested. I think I could have liked it a lot more had I read it around Halloween or in the winter.
