Perfectly paced. It’s mysterious with plenty of creepiness mixed in. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

As user leonorekoki noted, the way the one indigenous character in this book is portrayed is BIG YIKES.

I listened to this on audiobook and I'd say it definitely helped me get through. The themes of family, loss, grief really came through and the blending of timelines actually worked really well. I really enjoyed the mystery element to it more than I had in The Invited perhaps because the clear different timelines really helped flush things out. Overall a great book to listen to while knitting on dark winter evenings.

I can’t get over the racist depiction of the book’s single  indigenous character. There are other things the author did well but this character is so central to the narrative,  and the author’s depiction so hard to stomach that I couldn’t in good conscience recommend this book to anyone, not when there are so many books to read. It saddens me that the only review I could find that reflects this was from a Native reader. You don’t need to be indigenous to recognize how flat, simplistic,  animalistic and problematic the author’s portrayal of Auntie is, and how poorly it serves the story.
