This book starts out on a strong foot, but the longer it drones on, the point begins to devolve. The book is highlighting white collar/blue collar classism, and at the same time “ahh! There won’t be any jobs because the machines are taking over!!!” But the machines become less of a focus, and zooms in on Dr. Proteus’s (what I would classify) midlife crisis. Could have done without the work outing/workshop/team building event… thingy. It’s just made the plot lag.

On machines:
“Well, what the heck,” said Buck. “I mean, they aren’t people. They don’t suffer. They don’t mind working.”
“No. But they compete with people.”
“That’s a pretty good thing, isn’t it—considering what a sloppy job most people do of anything?”
“Anybody that competes with slaves become a slave,” said Harrison thickly, and he left.”
