When I first read this as a pre-teen, I didn't fully understand it, but I loved how the world building carried me away. This rich universe still holds up and it's even better now that I (more or less) understand some of the political and socio-economic nuances of this epic story. This book deserves it's foundational sci-fi text status.

Thank FUCK this is over. I’ve been dragging myself through this for ALMOST A YEAR. (I can’t DNF books, my biggest flaw.)
I get that seventeen year old girl isn’t Herbert’s target audience but lord I struggled to push through this one. It’s so patriarchal that it pained me. Paul was such a fckin annoying protagonist and I feel like his ‘character development’ was just a trajectory of him becoming a bitch and developing a god complex. He was insufferable. He was supposedly a young teen but talked and acted like a middle aged man. It was freaky and unsettling and I struggled to view him as a human being because he was portrayed as some glorified cult leader. It just made him an entirely unrelatable character. The plot was OKAY, somehow boring and convoluted at the same time, but I couldn’t stand the constant use of all these fictional words. It was so confusing. Yes, there was a list of definitions at the back of the book but it took me eleven months to read already and it would’ve taken eleven more months if I was constantly flicking back and forth from the dune dictionary. There were too many characters with wacky ass names and I couldn’t remember who was who so I just lived in ignorance and pretended I knew exactly what was going on.
The only character I actually liked was Jessica, cause she’s a badass bitch and she served and slayed. Jessica’s daughter is a freaky little shit and I do not wish to elaborate. Somebody put a leash on it.

The takeaway:
Don’t read this unless you are a slightly homophobic, slightly misogynistic middle aged white man with an interest in sand grains and politics.

(The two stars I gave this book were for the fact that I watched the movie first and pictured Paul as Timothee Chalamet the entire time and it was very amusing.)

I’m in awe of the world Frank Herbert created. A phenomenal read if you’re willing to take your time to understand every detail.

I loved this so much more than the movie. It’s so rich and I can see why adaptations have been so hard. I really enjoyed the fact we got an inner look at so many characters and yeah, the world building
