Nate and I listened to this on audio, and it was a pleasantly suspenseful story. Slightly predictable in parts, but not overly so, and the setting was great - Edinburgh works well for ghost stories. The villain was nicely creepy, and the conflict between Cass’s ability to cross the veil and her overall good and trusting relationship with her parents was well done.

Cassidy is a pretty decent main character and her friendship with Jacob was one of the best parts of the book.

I'm so easily scared, so I'm not at all into thrillers and ghost stories, but this gorgeous middlegrade story - City of Ghosts, was such a fun read!
Enter a new V.E. Schwab world, a world where Cassidy's best friend is a ghost, Jacob. Ever since her accident, she was miraculously saved. Now she can see the ghosts of the past and what happened to them. When her parents are starting a tv show to research paranormal places - starting in Edinburgh, Cassidy joins them on their trip. What she discovers there about the ghost world, will change her life for good...
Schwab did such a good job with this book! It's fun, a little scary at some times (for children) and her story was so original! The "ghosts as a best friend" part was cute and I loved the dynamics between Cassidy and Jacob. Also, her parents are such hilarious characters! I definitely want to read more... the next book is taking place in the bone tunnels of Paris ☠️ (I would absolutely never visit that place in real life).

2.5 stars. I admit that there's nothing inherently wrong with the book and maybe part of the reason is that I should really stay away from YA books now that their voice annoys me. It doesn't help that I didn't like the voice of the narrator (audiobook). I realize the further in age I get from young adult the less I enjoy the average books, but then there's really good books out there that still give me hope. What I'm trying to say is...if you love fantasy/adventure YA books and you are either young or young at heart this is probably for you. If you're looking for a book that's out of this world unique and will shock you with how original and amazing it is, well, this is probably not it.

So, considering I have never read anything by V.E. Schwab before, I thought it would be a good idea to start with her middle grade books and then if I liked her writing style then move on to her other books.
And I’ve been pleasantly surprised by this one.
The story follows Cassidy Blake, a young girl who can see ghosts, as she travels to Edinburgh with her parents and gets caught up in all manner of paranormal activities. The writing style was really easy to follow and I found myself flying through it which I wasn’t really expecting to be fully honest.
But I am glad that I gave it a try and I’m excited to move on to the next ones.
