This was a fictionalized take on the 1612 Pendle witch trials that occured in England. The author has retained much of the actual history and the characters - twelve were accused and ten found guilty in the actual trial.
If you were to take it as just that, the book is quite good. However, it lacked so many things that could have made this more enjoyable or poignant.
Fleetwood made for a dubious female lead. I didn't find her likeable, despite her having grown a spine later in the story. The book was atmospheric at times, but a proper one was never set, and the tone seemed conflicted, the narration messy. Alice needed to be fleshed out more. Honestly, something just didn't click with me. It could be the author's style, or simply the story.
I had hoped I would have enjoyed reading this much more than I actually did. I did try though.
