A young woman throws herself over a bridge in the Parisian night, a man walks quietly away, forever disrupted.

“In some cases carrying on, just carrying on, is the superhuman achievement.”

He turns to pleasure in order to run away from the pain, the judgement from that night.

“An excess of pleasure debilitates the imagination as well as the judgement. For the same reason, adolescents lose their metaphysical anxieties with their first mistress.”

Having fought for freedom, solace is found only by taking refuge in chains. Would you judge a slave for the evil of his master?

“On the bridges of Paris, I too, learned that I was afraid of freedom.”

Nonetheless, what life is worth living?

“Young woman! Throw yourself in the water again so that I might have once more the opportunity to save us both!”

Have you ever had one of those conversations with someone where the other person carries the conversation and never allows you to speak? The conversation goes on and on as the other person tells you their life story, proves their guiltiness, and, ultimately, proves the guiltiness of all humanity? What's that? You haven't? Oh, then mon cher, this is the book for you! Ah, here's our gin now. Cheers.

Much more accessible, thought-provoking, and thoroughly entertaining exploration of some of Camus' ideas.
