I'm devastated.

I don't even know why this is my very first time reading this, but anyway.

This book is the pure definition of raw and honest and deep (and funny). The story as a whole is beautifully told, and it's able to make you laugh and cry at the very same moment so you just end up looking like a psychopath when you read it.

Maybe it’s me being a product of the 2010’s but I absolutely adored this book. I first read it when I was a teenager. I remember sitting at a picnic table at a rest area in the spring, reading the last few words of the book, and wondering if I would ever pick it up again. I took a few moments to study the leaves and think about how the sunlight felt on my skin. I’m now 21 and am attempting to reread John Green’s books (all of which I own and have significantly altered my personality…duh).
This book was better than I remember it being. Often, people tease about the “deep” content in this book and call it pretentious but I think it poses significant questions for young readers to reflect on, and it makes death feel normal, but still painful. I think this is an amazing read. John Green, I love ya, buddy.

I read this before the big wave of fans started. My aunt regularly goes to book signings in Raleigh and she got me this book. I remember reading it in health class instead of listening to my teacher talk about STD's. I think that the characters are very bland. I don't think "love at first sight" is real, and I just think the characters thought they needed to experience "love" before they both die from cancer. I think that their language was a bit too exaggerated for teenagers. I don't know. It didn't click for me. I'm glad it does for other people though. I remember when it really hit that almost all the girls in my entire English college prep class did their book reports on this. I also remember them saying that this was the only book they didn't sparknote. If the truly vapid can enjoy this book, then you know it's not hard to read. It just sucks. You can tell this book was written by a man. Let me be clear, I have no problem with reading men's works. But John Green is a predator. Even the way he snagged his wife raises red flags, and it leaks into the book.

Incredible.

This book. This book is about death. And dying. And living. The way Green weaves the words into this amazing life of a story almost makes death sound romantic. For me, this life of a story is not about living each day to the fullest, but more about the mark you leave behind. The mark you leave is not about the quantity of loved ones or accomplishments, but the quality. Green is an incredible author.
