Wall Street has crushed, the prohibition has dried up the country, and unlicensed magi are a politician easy target. A con artist's job promises vengeance and chaos to those wronged by the powerful.

This was a delightful, quick read with a very accurate title. It was part heist, part mystery, and part magical realism. I typically don't like when a book jumps around in time because sometimes that's more style over substance, but it worked out well in this case.

The only glaring thing about this was the use of old timey derogatory terms for Black people. I can see why they chose to use those terms to fit into prohibition era colloquialism but it was still jarring to read.

This is a clever, short book; so clever, in fact, that I can't get rid of the conviction that I feel like I don't quite understand what happened. It starts with a little two-page scene of a young woman finding a body and getting a taxicab; then, after that, the chapter headings are marked with a date in 1929 and parenthetical notations such as "thirteen days before." This is clever, but I feel that there was a lot of skipping around with the dates and that was a little confusing. I enjoyed the setting, mostly Seattle in 1929, and the characters, and the atmosphere was wonderful. The way the story and the characters' motivations unfolded kept me reading, waiting with bated breath for the reveal. However, there is never a big reveal moment, the backstory unfolds so gradually it's impossible to put a finger on any big turning point. I love this but I am unclear about exactly what happened and why. I could read it again, I guess. Maybe I will, later.

What a fun, magical mystery! Despite its length, the character development was really well-done. It jumped around in time but wasn’t hard to follow at all. I actually kind of enjoyed the non-linear format and I usually tend to prefer chronological narratives. I hope there are sequels! I would love to read more about our mysterious heroine and her adventures.

Thank you NetGalley, author and publisher for the arc in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

A really enjoyable read although a lot of details and complicated stories were involved in only 180 pages, with many plots unexplained, still open and honestly a bit confusing. However I assume this will be a series and I’d really like to read more!
