Lots of hockey and college partying still, but I enjoyed the plot a bit more of these years.

Volume 2 which tracked Bitty’s junior and senior years. I preferred this volume. One highlight was the tender depiction of Bitty’s relationship, the way he and his partner showed up for each other, supported one other, communicated openly and put effort into their relationship. Another was the focus on all the fears and emotions around coming out (to who/when/how) - especially when you are in the public eye as a professional sportsman in a notoriously masculine “hard man” sport. Well worth my reading time.

After loving Check Please: Book 1, I immediately dived into Book 2! I enjoyed reading about the crazy, wholesome dynamic that the hockey players on Samwell’s team possess and their open-mindedness. I won’t say too much as I don’t want to spoil Book 1, but Book 2 is equally as fun to read. Bitty’s tweets at the end are also quite the hoot. I love how Ukazu continued with the vlogger style format with Bitty and amped up his pie-making passion…the guy even wrote his senior thesis about pies. 🥧😆 All and all, Check, Please is a fantastic series if you are looking for something fun and heartwarming.

Even better than book 1 in my opinion. We got to see the development of Bitty's relationships through his last two years, and the message is so powerful: it is easier to be present in your life and do things well the less you have to restrict your identity and self-expression. It was a good portrayal of the mental burden placed on queer people and the mental realestate taken up by hiding parts of yourself, navigating added tensions on your relationships, processing and responding to micro and macro aggressions towards you, and so many more things in addition to the normal stresses of being a person and a college student and a partner, etc. My one thing with these books is that I wish the tweets were interspersed throughout rather than at the end, but I did enjoy a lot in this book that the vlog scripts were integrated into each chapter.
