There are several things in this book that I would have loved to have seen in the movie, but were probably too difficult to do with the practical effects at the time. There are some aspects of this book that I'm glad they left out of the movie, such as the Skeksis speaking their own language (I believe that's what they did for the first draft of the movie, but they changed it because it got too confusing and that's why the Chamberlain talks so weird... hmMMMm)

This is a rare occasion where I'll say that the movie was better than the book. (but the movie came out first, so... yeah. Go watch the movie, it's great.)

This is an odd book. I suppose it comes from a time when the main point of a novelization was to throw on shelves in airports and such to be an ad for the movie, but the vocabulary in this book puts it out of the reach of what I assume to be the target audience.
Then again, I kept asking the kids if they wanted to give up on reading it, and they stuck it out so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Better than the movie. The puppets are so stiff and lifeless. The book adds much needed character, detail, and nuance that the movie is missing.

I like this more than I should because of how much I adore the film.

The Dark Crystal was and still is one of my favourite children's films, so it was nice to be able to immerse myself in the original novelisation for a few days.

The novel itself is quite a by-the-book adaptation; essentially a scene-by-scene fleshing out of the film's script, though with some extended sequences that, while welcome (particular the extra dialogue with Aughra), didn't really expand the world at all.

The narrator is omniscient, which isn't to my taste and hasn't aged particularly well either (or at least I haven't encountered it in any recently-published book myself); further making it feel more like a description of the film rather than a narrative that stands on its own.
