Godkiller by Hannah Kaner is the first in a multi-POV fantasy trilogy that flips the script: humans are killing gods, destroying their symbols and shrines. An intriguing twist? The twist? Gods can’t exist without human belief.
The female main character, Kissen, is a fierce fighter navigating life after losing a leg and using a prosthesis. Fun fact: her name means pillow in German, but there’s absolutely nothing pillowy about her!
The book features fantastic queer and disability representation, including characters who are deaf and others with various challenges.
While I loved the bold premise and inclusivity, I do wish the pacing had been a little faster

I was enthralled by this story from the prologue. The world building was exceptional, the characters were fantastically diverse and beautifully flawed, the narrative was compelling, and I adored every moment I was in the story. I was also a fool ™️ who didn't realize this was the first in a trilogy and book two isn't due it until next spring! Cue me aiming to get it on my library hold list ASAP to get near the front of the line!

“The people with the sharpest edges sometimes hid the deepest wounds”
The story is set in an interesting world–a place where gods were destroyed in the great war. Kissen is a godkiller in this world and occassionaly gets called for duty when there’s a rogue god. With a title like ‘Godkiller’, I was eager to dive into Kissen’s life and see her in action, but I was disappointed to find that she is only one part of the story.
The main story starts when Kissen meets Inara, a little girl bound to Skediceth, the god of white lies. How Skedi is alive without a shrine is a mystery. Together, they take off on a journey to uncover the truth and hopefully break the bond between Inara and Skedi. Along the way, they meet Elogast, a former knight, who has his own motives. When strange things start happening to their group, it feels like something or someone is preventing them from finding answers.
Despite an interesting world with interesting characters, I felt like something was missing. The story was all over the place, focusing on the many characters and world-building, causing it to lose depth of story. For example, Inara ability to see other people’s emotions in the form of colours could have played a more significant role but felt underused. Some of the plot twists felt abrupt and a little out of the blue. Generally, the writing was not to my liking. Although the book has a lot of potential, it was not a good fit for me. I do plan to read the next book in the hope of getting more depth.

This story was absolutely incredible and I can’t wait for book 2. A diverse and interesting cast of characters mixed with unique and compelling world building makes for a hell of a tale. Kissen, our scarred but strong bi (or pan) queen, was an excellent foil to Inara, a sweetheart with more secrets than someone so young should have ever amassed (including a small god named Skediceth). And then enters Elogast who is also dealing with trauma of the past while trying to figure out what it will take to mend. All of our heroes are somewhere on the “neutral” scale, with Kissen being chaotic, Elogast lawful, and Inara true (although she could potentially be considered neutral good too). Skedi’s alignment is a little more complicated and is what makes his plot so interesting. Watching all of the characters interact with one another is such a treat. Their growth throughout the story as they slowly become found family is really what I loved the most. I also wanted to add that I adored the food descriptions. Please release a cookbook!

Ok so calming the fuck down, I absolutely loved this book.
The characters were so intricate and enthralling, their motivations were so interesting and I was so conflicted with my support of some people but still routing for them.
The world building was magnificent and even though I hate 'we're travelling to find magic in a fantasy story' stories I was still so invested.
This is seriously a 5 star book. And I loved the casual queer rep.
Unfortunately I can't talk about anything else because of spoilers but I loved every single aspect of this. I literally hate fantasy stories but I loved all the fantasy tropes in this. This book and the sequel are literally the only fantasy books on my shelf for reference on my interest in fantasy.
But I seriously loved this and I can't wait to see what happens next.
9.7/10. The gay agenda is winning and it's being led by Vi from Arcane 2.0 (no offence, love them both, I just couldn't stop picturing her as Vi😭😭😭😭)
