I mean, the main character is the definition of “unreliable narrator”. And I liked how it was up to the reader to decide to feel sympathy or anger with the main characters lies and omissions - for me, I feel more of the former. I found the change between the character making strategic changes to her retellings/memories to these alterations happening without explanation very interesting to read. This change coincided with the main character considering a traumatic event in her past which is never detailed enough to let the reader know what truely happens - and by the time we learn of the event we aren’t sure if it’s just another lie/embellishment or the truth. And neither does the character. I think it is a very sympathetic portrayal of a lost human who deserves more than what they received and has developed and unhealthy coping strategy which is used by all of us to some degree (from white lies to fake identities)… plus the prose is beautiful (although I’m sure would be even more so in Italian!).

I believe this would be better to read in Italian. Not sure that some of the things are really translatable.

A series of cutting reflections from a writer exploring familial bonds, identity and her relationship to creativity and lying. The book is divided into a series of non-linear anecdotes linked by a common theme and delivered with a sardonic wit that makes for a really fun read. Though it started to drag a bit in the final quarter, the penultimate chapter did a great job of tying remaining thematic threads together for a satisfying conclusion. Despite the ambiguity around the narrator's character, I feel like I really understood Vero as a person by the end. Definitely the sort of book that merits a second readthrough. If you like Sayaka Murata's work, you'll for sure like this!
