c'était très bien! plein de leçons de vie élégamment écrites, et ça te laisse penser.... les relations humaines, ce n'est pas évident du tout.

It wasn't bad... but I found myself falling asleep a lot. Not sure what to make of it.

Livre non terminé. Je n'ai pas du tout apprécié, l'histoire était lente, je n'ai pas accrochée avec l'écriture. Dommage, depuis le temps que j'entendais parler de cette auteure..

I received a free copy through Netgalley, in return for an honest review.

Thank God I'm done reading that novella and that it was so short, or I might not have been able to finish it.

It almost entirely existed of dialogues. I might have gathered this from the blurb, but it was even more than I expected - often I really had to search for the real emotions behind what was said, since they were not at all clear, and nothing was said between what literally was said by the characters, who seemd to like, hate, tease, scold, and whatever each other in a pace so fast I couldn't keep up. This is how an autistic person must feel in an NT world. Without knowing the emotions behind them, the words meant nothing at all.

The dialogues did seem kind of natural, and that's what I can say in favour of the book.

90% of the novel are dialogues. It isn't bad, but to my mind dialogues don't tell us much about the characters. Besides, sometimes it was hard to understand who was talking. And the story which Pierre told Chloe looks like an excuse for his son's betrayal. And I don't think that something can justify it.

Chloé’s husband has left her and their children for another woman. She is angry and confused but her father-in-law (or would that be ex father-in-law?), Pierre, comes to the rescue and whisks her away from it all. They have never been close, Pierre generally quiet in her presence but as they talk and argue, she learns so much more about him, and how sometimes you can’t help who you loved.

Someone I Loved is a novella composed mostly of conversations, starting with a car journey and little snippets of everyday life that Gavalda does so well. Soon Chloé’s betrayal is revealed and her awkward relationship with Pierre grows into a confidant. The speech is unattributed, no he said, she said, and the prose is sparse, all adding to the conversational tone. At one point, there is speech within speech and it all got a bit confusing, but it is an intimate little look into someone’s life through what they decide to tell another.
