This was hard to read, it was like watching someone sink into quicksand in slow motion. Fascinating, horrifying, depressing, cynical, at points slightly hopeful- haven't read anything like this in a long time.

Getting a look into the psyche of someone who cannot understand humanity, therefore struggles to define himself, defines himself as a monster and the watches himself become one, and in the end is just so incredibly human even while he believes himself not to be. That is what I would summarize this book to be, even though there is so much more.

Read the trigger warnings though. Would not recommend this to anyone currently struggling with depression or suicidal ideation. I'd say I'm mentally doing well right now, don't know what this would have been like if I'd read it at other points in life.

This book delves on in this character Yozo as he has grown up reflecting on all of his flaws and blaming himself for everything. He believes in the fact that he is no longer considered a human being and questions what it means to be living. He also convinces himself that others see him that way too. The story navigates its way through childhood all the way to adulthood, and really shows how he dealt through with his depression durning that time.

Reading this is painful especially finding out a lot of the things that happen in the book actually occurred in the author’s life. Like, yes, I know it’s a semi autobiography but the fiction tends to be 80% not 20%.

Anyway, what i find fascinating even in not being able to understand humans, when it comes to woman there’s definitely some sort of understanding that woman are the lesser being. 🙄

I think the writing is quite poignant, it’s what drew me in, the author is really able to show the character as is without justifying the actions of the character.
