I finished this book fairly quickly because I just wanted to be done with it. It’s probably one of the worst books I’ve ever read. So many people loved it and several people recommended it to me but it took maybe 2 chapters before I wanted to google the ending and be done with it. The husband and wife are unreliable narrators and it was pretty easy to figure out what was going on. There were no likable characters and the husband’s entitlement was exhausting. I hated listening to his parts. The final chapter tried so hard to be Gone Girl but failed miserably. Sarah is no Amy. Not even close. This story of betrayal and revenge goes too far and is too unbelievable for it to be any good. The part that really got me was identifying the murder victim was pregnant and, at 4 weeks along, they extracted DNA from the fetus to determine its paternity. That killed the book for me. I wish I hadn’t read it and I’m disappointed I spent a week on it.

This is easily the worst book I have ever read in my entire life. Jeneva Rose blew everyone out of the water with this, even Colleen Hoover!

There was absolutely zero research on the law or the police force. One episode of Law & Order was watched to complete this monstrosity of a novel. I am glad that this was free and I did not pay for it because that would have been a complete waste of my working girl money.

Here is a list of everything that I was confused about and/or also hated about this book:

  • The way Adam describes women
    • He only sees them as sex objects and he has a one-track mind when it comes to any woman
    • He kisses people for no reason and harassed them numerous times, it was sickening

  • Adam Morgan is a literal monster
    • He attempts to justify cheating on Sarah (which seeing how Sarah ends up, he shouldn't have)
    • Adam is a complete and utter shame to any good man that has ever existed in all of human existence
      • His drinking problem becomes a main aspect of the story for literally no reason. This novel consisted of a full chapter of him drinking, only for it to lead absolutely nowhere.
      • He has NOOO brain!
        • This man does stupid stuff for no reason - why do you trust every single person that steps into your life? You should know yourself what a trustworthy person is not based on your own personality.
        • Adam, you can't even trust yourself, bro.

  • The worst plot twist I have ever read.
    • Think about any one character and it is probably them.
    • Happened in the last ten pages.
    • I hate Sarah.

  • Each and every single one of these characters needs psychological help
    • Most of them are obvious, including, Adam, Sarah, Anne
    • Honorable mentions: Eleanor, Matthew, Bob, all of the police officers, Kelly, Scott, Rebecca

  • Random flashbacks
  • Details of Sarah being rich
  • Adam's failed writing career
  • How long does this story go on? Like in a sense of time.
  • Useless characters and metaphors
  • Everyone sounds and looks the same
  • Adam escaping
  • Ants and nature
  • No man can keep it in his pants
  • Again, the plot twist
  • The four-in-one murders
  • Kelly
  • The end of it
  • Robert Miller

  • Sarah mentions her being the best attorney and then she turns around and becomes the worst one by every second
    • her unprofessionalism
    • her terrible character
    • unreliable narrator, worse than Adam
    • wanting to have sex with every man in the book
      • uses her sex appeal to her advantage, but then embarrasses herself because it never works and she looks bad
    • NO man is worth this and she knows it

I hope no one suffers as much as I did by reading this!

Wow. Did not see that ending coming at all. Great book! I loved trying to figure it out the whole time and I was definitely thrown for a loop so many times! I had my suspicions but was always determined no that couldn’t be it. Well. It was it!

How in the world was this a debut novel?!! I AM BEYOND IMPRESSED.

This is one of the best domestic thrillers I’ve read in a long time, and I think one of the best, period. I read it all in nearly one sitting. The pacing of the story just increased with every chapter, and the dual POVs between Sarah, the renowned attorney, and her husband Adam, accused of murdering his mistress, made for the utmost suspense and scandal. Seriously, the writing in this book was incredible. I could barely put the book down to eat, though I definitely had moments of pause just trying to wrap my head around everything going on with this case.

Ugh, it was perfect! It’ll keep you guessing and piecing things together the whole way through as if you’re a part of the trial yourself. Highly, highly recommend this one!

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I enjoyed mystery/thriller/suspense novels more. I read it bc a friend recommended it, and it was good. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. If you like those kinds of books,  you’ll like this.
Although there is a scene where someone breaks into the main character’s house and touches her and she doesn’t think twice about it and doesn’t look at them. Then calls them her “midnight visitor” and I found that very weird and not even necessary for the plot… so that could be triggering for some people.

The most predictable 'mystery' I've read in a long time. Read for a bookclub, otherwise I would've put this down after ch 4

The plot itself was wild and kept me pulled in but the writing was meh. There was a lot of thinly veiled misogyny and a homophobic slur just dropped in at one point for????? An unknown reason??? The dialogue was kinda cheesy and Sarah spent a lot of time talking badly about other women. Adam's character development didnt make any sense. It just felt like the details were poorly researched and executed, but the plot twist really was a good one.
