This book was a pleasant surprise. I'm always anxious that it will be the same as the last book, but it wasn't, and it surprised me in a good way! I really liked the book, and I can't wait to get some more answers in the next book :)

So, I fell into a slump after finishing the last book. These books are mentally harsh to read after a while, so I'll likely take a break for a bit.

But, I enjoyed the characters and setting in this one! Hector was refreshing, though he has his quirk like all the adults do -- he's too afraid to stand up to authority in his town. I enjoyed his assistance to the Baudelaires. And I enjoyed the Quagmires making a strong appearance!!

Of course, the chaos got more chaotic and the inventions and solutions were wildly hard to believe. But, we're learning more and more about VFD which is making things interesting.

As I've mentioned in other reviews, these books are starting to get repetitive. I appreciated that this book moved the plot along rather than just making the kids go through essentially the same thing over and over again. It also opened up some mysteries which the series was seriously lacking up to this point. Better than some of the others in the series, but still not fantastic.
