I couldn’t put this book down! The sweet romance between Kaida and Tarrin that bloomed was everything… the suspense with Eklos kept me on my toes and I had to know what happened next! So many unexpected twists! I can’t wait to start to second book!

I think I would have loved this book when I was younger. Since I am older, I found myself wanting more from the plot and characters. Something I will say is i appreciated the short chapters and thought that this book definitely went the right way in doing the dual/multiple POV.
Can I just say? THANK GOD she's a shapeshifter too or else I'd be a little...icked out with their relationship..haha.

I LOVE this book! Finally found a book with dragons that is so so good!

This story follows Kaida a human slave to Master Eklos, a dragon. She lives in the world Elysia where dragons have taken over and enslaved humans. One day Kaida is mysteriously rescued by a young dragon prince, Tarrin. She has no idea why, and is rather perplexed, especially with her hatred towards dragons who murdered her mother. And now she’s being rescued by the royal dragon family? Let’s just say that introduction was not a very happy one

I really really wanted to like this book and went in so happy and excited to read it. The writing style needs so much work. It is very short and to the point, no explaining, and the writing doesn't do a good job of painting a good picture of what things are like.
Maybe give it a shot? But I almost stopped half way through because I was so fed up with it, but I'm almost done and I'm still not happy.

"Hurt people only hurt more people."

A fun read to be sure. It took a minute for me to warm up to this book and I'm going to blame that on the audio reader--wasn't a fan of the voice. I'm glad I pushed through because the characters grew on me. Tarrin and Kaida grew on me over time and the push-pull of their romantic tension was fun to watch play out. I liked Kaida's spunk and her snark with Tarrin was endearing. Also, they're dragons and dragons are ALWAYS cool. It utilized a lot of cliches, but i do love a well done cliche so not a negative for me. An easy read and a good time for the regular YA fantasy reader.

2.5 stars.

There was a lot about this that I enjoyed! I think it was just a little too trope-y for my taste. I know others who would go nuts for this book though, with the dragon shape-shifters especially.

I found Emily an amazing indie author on Instagram, and saw she has written and self published this series, so o got the first book to read and see what she was like, I’m so glad I did…….

This first book of Emily’s grab me from the first moment sentence I read, the storyline is brilliant with dragons and human “living” together but with it being in a war with how they live, then insert this fighter of a human girl who is nearly getting by, is saved by a prince who she finds is a shifter, just to be thrown into a world where she is also a shifter.

We follow their story as well as the war that is revolving around them and family. The things they go through and the battles, with an ending that leaving me wanting to start the next book to find out what happens next.

Truly a masterpiece and I can’t wait to find out more

First I must sleep!....

Absolutely loved this book! As I've mentioned in other reviews I'm terrible at reviews and I wish I could word vomit my feelings as I'm reading. But I'm still learning! Scales of Ash & Smoke has a piece of my reading heart and I'm anxiously awaiting the releases of book 2 and 3. If you don't already follow Emily on Instagram...do so! She's hilarious and real about her writing journey and it's a blast watching her books come to life.

***Update: listening to the audiobook now 05/20/2022***
