I was so fucking bored, after hitting half the book I was just skimming and skipping chapters to get to the end

This book was PHENOMENAL. One of the most creative and original fantasy books I’ve ever read. Not only do you get sucked into the plat, but all of the emotions are so real and strong yet not over the top. So excited to read the next one.

The first thing of note in my opinion was how much this felt like Priory of the Orange Tree. Not in terms of plot; but the setup and storytelling were quite similar to me. We had multiple POV chapters that were totally unrelated for the first 50% of the book, an expansive and complex world and political schema, and very character driven storytelling. These things are not bad, but I do find that—for me—they require more mental commitment and focus to keep up with all the various threads of the story. By the last 25%, I was invested and intrigued by where things were headed, but I have to admit I was disappointed by how long it really took me to get there. I will continue the series, but truthfully I think it’s mostly because I already own the second book 😬
