I enjoyed the main female character going from “can’t do anything on my own” to “I’ll do this myself and damn all those not with me.”
However, there is so much gratuitous violence. It feels very shock-factor-y. I was horrified for so much of it.
Also, while I love the female character’s depth, the male character is so flat. There is SO much objectifying of women.
I think I’m still gonna finish this series, but wearily.

I've had this on my list to read for a while now. And I'm not sure what took me so long to start this, but I'm so glad I did! This was fantastic. About halfway through, I went ahead and ordered the rest of the series and snagged me a preorder for "Heir." And when it comes to series, I generally don't hop directly into the next one. I like to let them sink in a bit. But on a rare occasion, I have to binge it all. And I'm doing it here because it's just too good not to.

Elias is definitely my favorite POV of this story currently. Laia is great as well. And I feel she's going to get a ton of character development in the rest of the series. I fully expect her to become my favorite.

Overall, this has everything I love about fantasy books. There's adventure, suspense, intriguing characters, a little romance, and a fun magic system. Can't wait to dive into the rest of this journey and see where it takes me!

I fell in love with this series and consumed it all in less than a month. I read this book in 2 days. It can get a bit graphic with violence but it's all handled with care, in my opinion. Every character is complicated and so well developed. Truly a 10/10--er--5/5
