Auren’s Stockholm Syndrome is still strong, but the growth I thought I saw coming at the end of book one is already happening and I’m here for it. I had several theories proved right, but I’m not mad about it. One of them, the author had me second guessing myself! Excited to move on to the next book!

Okay now I'm even more confused just for different reasons.

It's obvious that King Midas doesn't have the power to turn things to gold that is all Auren. But how has he gotten away with that. I still need that answered.

And what is up with Rip? Or King Rot? How ever you want to refer to him. And how did he appear as 2 people both Rip and Rot in the presence of King Midas. Does he has someone else pretend to be Rip when he has to be Rot? And how does he change forms? Is that a Fae thing and is so is Auren able to do the same so that she doesn't turn everything she touch to gold? Is it something all Fae can do or just him?

Hopefully we find out as the series continues.

If someone asks you for the definition of a filler book, please show them this book.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed reading this! But at some point I looked down, saw that I was on page 370 and still — almost nothing had happened.

There's some character and relationship development and I did enjoy reading about the soldiers and their time at camp but really, all of that could've been shortened.

We do get loads of fun reveals at the end of the book though, one of them I really didn't expect. Will continue reading this series but really, don't expect too much plot from this installment (and I'm saying this as someone who's always characters > plot).

This is my reread of the series in preparation for the release of Goldfinch later this year. I still very much enjoy the growing relationship between Auren and Rip and I love that she finally starts to find her way to herself. Already knowing the major plot points it was fun to remeet Lu, Judd and Osrik and I am still a great fan of the Wrath. Malina is still obnoxious and entitled and I still think she deserved all that happened to her for being such a horrible monarch. However, I still think her plotlines are super important for the overall story and she is definitely not my least favourite monarch (looking at you Midas).
