Kitchen Table Wisdom is a nonfiction book written in a series of vignettes telling the spiritually significant stories experienced by Dr. Rachel Naomi Remen. Dr. Remen was a Jewish pediatrician and later oncologic therapist, and her perception of healing, spirituality, and their relationship makes this book a must-read for anyone interested in a medical field. Remen’s writing is highly accessible to a wide audience while also reading in a powerful and intelligent way. Using the dichotomy of having a grandfather who was a rabbi and two parents in the science, Remen is able to bridge the gap between the rational and the magical realms of thought. Additionally, the anecdotes chose by Dr. Remen teach valuable lessons about mortality, pain, and trauma in a way that I do not often see in nonfiction. I recommend this book to fans of Letters to My Daughter by Maya Angelou and those who want less scientific look into healing.
