I very much liked to have finally read this classic. The "letter-style" was very different from what I use to read but on the other hand very interesting. I couldn't have guessed that it might succeed to tell a story almost only from letters but it did and the reader did get the feeling as if he might really know thecharacers since they wrote in such an intimate manner.

For the cultural impact alone, that "Dracula" has, it is worth a read. I liked the created atmosphere and was hooked by the suspense in the beginning. I tried to constantly remind myself: "For a 19th-century-reader this must have been absolutely mindblowing." BUT for a reader today "Dracula" is soooo slow, we all know the story more or less and the artificial retardation of the plot (looking at you, Van Helsing, with your constant "I can't tell you now, you couldn't handle it") made me skip a few pages without missing anything. Every single character is an archetype and one-dimensional, their behavior and verbal outbursts are implausible. But still: Kudos, Bram Stoker.

I really liked this! I could feel the tension in the air, however I was expecting more sightings of the Count. We see one of the characters interact with him a lot at the beginning and then once he returns home we only hear about him in passing.
I enjoyed the characters, they felt very full and you can feel their emotions, such as their genuine terror at what was happening, as well as their love of one another.
I must admit that I wasn’t as scared as I would’ve liked to be, although this could just be a me problem. As I said before, it was tense, just not ‘can’t sleep at night’ scary.

Curse you goodreads for not saving my review!! Aghh!!

This is rather different from (and arguably better than) Twilight. Not what I expected.

PT: Reading around the world: Romania, books that have been on my TBR for way too long, classic lit

WIL
1) the audiobook reader (male). This guy really didn’t have to go as hard as he did but oh my GOD am I glad he did. If he’d been any less interesting, I probably would’ve DNFed this fairly early on, but this guy really just goes for it completely. The EMOTION in his voice??? Unparalleled. Rebecca Soler finally has some competition for the spot of my favorite audiobook reader.

2) not nearly as gruesome/frightening as I feared! This might be a WIDL for some, but I am SO glad the descriptions were pretty mild (by modern standards). One of my biggest reasons for not reading this earlier was the fear that it would actually scare and disturb me. It was okay tho!! Really not too bad at all!! I mean, I wouldn’t recommend it to younger kiddos, but like, it’s fully palatable for adults.

3) Jules Verne esque. Vibe match with Mr. Verne.

4) Characters that actually think things through and problem solve. Yay!! Thank god!! And they’re generally pretty good with communication too!!

WIDL
1) 2 books/1 book. The halfway ish point of this book feels like (basically) the conclusion of the whole first arc. The chapters immediately after that first arc ending dragged for me. Picked back up at the end tho. Should’ve been two books (by modern standards of book division anyway.)

2) character establishment. I just didn’t really care about the characters?? They didn’t have enough personality in the beginning... or the middle,,, or even the end actually. Need! More! Epitaphs!!

3) I’ve retained nothing.

NEUTRAL GROUND
1) gEe wHaTeVeR aRe tHesE myStErIoUs puNctUrE maRkS. I wish I had counted how many times this exact sentiment came up. It was A Lot.

Well written for the most part, some questionable decisions by the protagonists in the middle (seemed to all get struck by a bout of stupidity where they temporarily forgot the powers their adversary had for how strong and smart they supposedly were), and the story seemed to get stuck in London when they all took turns talking about handsome strong men taking care of a strong manly woman and tedious descriptions of how so and so was able to use so and so's accurate notes to compile even more accurate notes etc. One gets the feeling that the author started lacking inspiration halfway through and just wanted to get it over with.

The first half was definitely better than the second half, and I could have done without the constant infantilization of Mina, but overall it was much more enjoyable than expected.
