An easy to read, enjoyable novel. I would have enjoyed an epilogue to see how the sisters are doing several years later.

More like "the bronze star"
The story had potential at the beginning, two young girls whose singer/songwriter mother up and leaves after a mental breakdown. the. the girls are left to figure out what to do, heading to their estranged uncle Tinsley's home. The story lacked a true lead up to a struggle, then petered out with a mediocre resolution.
Compared to the glass castle, I was expecting a lot more from Jeanette Walls but was sorely disappointed.

A story of two girls trying to make the best decisions in life.
I love Jeannette Walls! I read two of her other books as well. She does no wrong. She can spin quite the tale!

For me, this was like a 3.5 star book. Having grown up around that area, I was waxing nostalgia which may be why I gravitated towards the narrative.
I appreciated the way Walls described the scenes of the town, the people, the cars, the structures—it was very easy for my imagination to make the movie while I read. I also didn’t find the writing to be elementary as I’ve read on here. Rather, I took that as the viewpoint of a 12 year old and how the world would look through their eyes.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. There were some detestable characters, but I loved Bean’s gumption and spunk. And man did my mouth water reading about Aunt Al’s cooking.

I liked the first third a lot, the second third some, and honestly turned the last page in surprise that that was the end. A good quick read, but leaves something to be desired.
