This book sounded like it had potential but the story line was just so blah. The first half was so slow I often found myself feeling forced to pick it up. Scott was basically just going back and forth between the two houses and there wasn't much more to it. I didn't feel the story really started gaining momentum until Victor came back home and even then, it still wasn't that great. It seemed like there were so many secrets and parts of Elise's past that could be uncovered but we only got to learn a few select things from Carmelita and then the book just ended. It was pretty anticlimactic and I felt rather disappointed with the whole thing. The story line was rather flat and I felt absolutely no connection to any of the characters. I'm not sure if I would check out another book by Matt Marinovich in the future.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.a

I received this book as an ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review:

Well this was definitely a psychological thriller! This isn't my usual genre but it really kept me on the edge of my seat. I only gave it three stars because of my personal preference but I think more avid readers of this type of book would really enjoy it. It was creepy and dark but still felt plausible which is perhaps the scariest part.

I love a good thriller, especially ones that deal with families and secrets. The Winter Girl didn’t have great reviews, but I felt like the synopsis was strong.

The beginning of the book was great. I wanted to know more about the awful couple and her sick father and what on earth the problem was, but things got out of hand really quickly.

I don’t even know where to start with the review because the book was just insane, over the top, and full of the most coincidental, awful, and weird secrets. Like.. just don’t even waste your time.

This book has some of the ingredients that could make a great thriller, but none of the storytelling and execution that makes it shine. I don’t even need to like the characters, I just need to believe them. I didn’t believe in anything in the book.

The only good thing about the book was that it completed a category in my reading challenge and wasn’t long, so I got that category completed fairly quickly.

This was a very creepy and disturbing book, yet it was fascinating and I couldn't put it down.

This book was just weird. The characters were written strangely, the events were not even close to being capable of being realistic, even the dialogue was off. The dying father being some sadistic mastermind, his kids following in his footsteps, the husband just going along for the ride. None of it made sense.

Chock full of gratuitous sex and violence. The entire book tried to one up itself with something more disgusting. Halfway through you're already numb to it all. Nothing redeeming as far as plot or characters. Seriously, who chose to publish this?

Note: listened to audio book. Don’t know if reading would have made difference??

This book is so, so slow. At about 30% in nothing was happening. And then the first “twist” was so odd, unbelievable, stupid - and then rather gross.

The characters were all terrible and unlikeable and did such stupid unbelievable things.

None of the relationships or interactions seemed realistic.

Just a really terrible story.

Usually when I dislike a book this much, I don't even end up finishing it. I finished this book because it's short and because the pacing is nice. Those two things were the only enjoyable aspects of this novel for me. I thought the plot had promise, but I found all the twists and turns to be overwrought instead of exciting. This is a dark book full of unlikeable people. I'm okay with both of those things when the writing is especially good, but that wasn't the case here.
