One of the best books I've ever read. It's so dark and intense I couldn't put it down.

Started well, with an unusual and intriguing premise. In spite of the pace picking up towards the end, the tension seemed to peter out for me. The ending felt sort of anticlimactic.

I was surprised to learn that the author changed the location for the English translation. I think the original location would have worked better, and the quirks of the characters would make more sense.

Other than that, it was definitely an interesting experience and I would be curious to read another book by this author.

Really fascinating premise. A 17th century witch haunts a small town (or does the town haunt her).

Modern solutions for a 17th century problem: surveillance cams, smart phone apps, & a council to monitor her whereabouts.  The problem is the townspeople are cursed to remain in Black Spring, they can't leave without being driven to suicide.  After some rebellious teens harass and hurt the witch, 17th century solutions are used and the boys are publicly flogged in the town square.

As one character states, one act of violence leads to another, never leading to a solution.

One of the things the author did, is the thing I love about Stephen King. He tells us what's going to happen, then fills in the story, building tension. "That was the last time we'd be together as a family..." Or "If I'd have known then what was to come...". Love that stuff!

The first half of the book sets up the town and the world they live in.  The second half straps you in like a rollercoaster and you can't get off till it's over!

Kicking off spooky season with a horror read. HEX is about a witch who haunts the town of Black Spring. She is from the 1600’s and she was forced to kill one child to save the other then she was killed herself for being a witch. Her eyes and mouth are stitched together and chains bound her arms to her sides. She randomly shows up throughout town and even inside homes. Don’t get too close because you’ll hear her whisper and her whispers lead to bad things… The worst part is that those in the town are forced to live there their whole lives because leaving will mean certain death by your own hand. This story is told by four townspeople and their lives around the witch set in 2012.

Wow the reviews are all over the place with this one but I truly enjoyed it a lot. I thought the premise was very original and interesting and I wasn’t bored at all throughout the book. I will say that this novel is definitely not for sensitive readers. The witch was creepy as hell and I enjoyed reading about the characters even though they weren’t all terribly likable. I was at a 5 star until the second part of the book as the ending felt pretty rushed and the actions of some people weren’t what I thought they were going to be, but after sitting on it I think it’s meant to show that grief manifests in people differently and you may act completely different than you typically do. But otherwise I very much enjoyed it and would recommend to any horror fan.
