This was hard to enjoy after seeing the movie version. I had a difficult time separating the two, as the movie streamlined the plot much more succinctly. The book felt long and jumpy.

In terms of the plot, I really did not love that
Alex didn't discover the villain on his own. He was told outright by someone else, which really undermines his heroic character.

Dragged a bit in the beginning but a solid murder mystery/psych thriller that has held up over time

This is my very first time reading a James Patterson book. To say that I enjoyed learning about Alex Cross and then watching him figure out this mystery was exhilarating. I am definitely going to be reading the rest of the series.  There is a lot of suspense in a lot of turns.  I pride myself in the usually being able to see how a story will end. I definitely could not with this one.

I liked this book a lot. Alex Cross was not only a psych/detective but also a lover boy. I didn't expect that, to be honest. I knew about Jezzie's 40% in, and I was right. Seoniji/Murphy was a psychopath that was for sure, but he had a rough childhood, and it made me sad even if he did a lot of problematic things like kidnapping, murder, stalking, etc. Kids didn't deserve shitty parents! It also made me sad that Michael died because he was a victim. This was fast-paced and compelling. Damn, the villains faced lethal injection. Overall, a great start to a series. Thank you, James, ✨
